Pub Guide
The great British pub is often the heart of our local community, without them there is nowhere for folk to gather. This page provides a list of the real ale pubs in North Devon. The number of open pubs declines each year - if you value your local please use it whilst you can!!
Within the North Devon CAMRA Branch there are around 265 public houses with the overwhelming majority known to serve real ale. It is from those 265 pubs that the branch selects its choice of pubs for inclusion in the annual Good Beer Guide. Pubs are considered for selection if they have consistently good beer scores from CAMRA members plus a number of other factors such as ambience, welcome, etc. Beer quality is, however, given the biggest weighting thus you, scoring the beer you drink regularly, directly influences this selection process.
See this document for scoring your beer. Beer Scoring Explained
This map shows the location of those pubs known to serve real ale. If any known to you are missing, please advise the Pubs Coordinator at ku.gro.armac.novedhtron@puorG.sbuP

- Thatched Inn
Abbotsham
EX39 5BA
(01237) 471321
The Thatched Inn is a traditional historic pub situated just outside of Bideford in the small village of Abbotsham. As its name suggest the 15th century stone building has a thatched roof and was originally 3 stone cottages before being converted into a public house. The interior of this ancient inn is equally charming and full of character as many of the buildings original features remain. In the recently refurbished bar and restaurant, gleaming brassware hangs from the walls and exposed beams to further complement the atmosphere. Not surprisingly, a place this old, steeped in history also has a resident ghost; a former customer who use to meet his loved one at The Thatched Inn. Normally open all day, however during the winter (October to March), the pub is shut between 3pm and 5pm, with food orders ending at 230pm and restarting at 6pm. The pub is officially open until 'close' so we have erred on the side of safety by specifying 2330. Outside there is an attractive beer garden and covered smoking shelter.

Legend has it that in 1690, after a large win at a game of cards, George Ley commemorated the event by having a new house built symbolising the features of a pack of cards. It has four floors, to represent the four suits, thirteen rooms for the number of cards in a suit, fifty two windows, fifty two stairs and was supposedly built on an area measuring fifty two feet square and signified the number of cards in a pack. It became an inn early in the nineteenth century (about 1822) and was known as the King's Arms and on the 1st June 1933 the name was changed to the Pack o' Cards. The pub now offers quality en-suite accommodation and in the garden there is a large playground for children and is within 10 minutes walk to the sea. On the west side of the inn, was a cobbled drive to the back of the building. This is probably where the horses were taken for stabling. It was also a vulnerable area to protect from attack, as shown by the arrow slit in the wall below the current bar.

Now it is a small rural village with a vibrant community spirit where peace and quiet reigns even in mid-summer. After the closure of the village shop, the pub created an area within the pub to serve the locals (see website for opening times). The pub is dog-friendly, although only allowing them into the guest accommodation and bar area. A magnificent log fire is a focal point in colder weather and the unique village inn atmosphere creates an ideal setting for visitors and locals to mix. Captain Jack's was converted from Woolacombe's original old farm buildings which have been on this site as early as the 12th Century. The circular stone pillars that form the central courtyard can be seen surrounding the Beer Garden. In 1170ad William De Tracy, one of four knights who allegedly murdered Thomas A Becket in Canterbury was caught hiding there, and executed. Folklore has it that his ghost still roams the beach, cursed forever to weave an impossible chain of sand along its length. From November until Spring the pub only opens on Saturday & Sunday and times will vary.

The Old Mill' was converted into a pub in the early eighties, and the mill dates back as far as the 17th Century. Parts of the workings can be seen in the grounds with the mill stones at the front entrance. The working part of the mill was upstairs and the flour was dropped into sacks on the lower floor. The stream that ran the mill used to run to the left of the building but has now been covered due to landscaping. Prior to conversion into a pub the front courtyard had been used for livestock auctions. A pleasing pub to visit with a selection of meals (many of which are suitable for vegetarians). The pub is closed, for the winter, from the end of November to March.
